WHERE THIS STARTED

A simple observation.

Across South Asia and the global diaspora, talent has always been here. What has been unevenly distributed is access.

Film has a visible layer and an invisible one. We see the final cut, the festival premiere, and the award. What remains hidden are the informal systems underneath: who shared the opportunity, who read the first draft, who explained the grant, or who made the key introduction.

When progress depends on who you already know, talent alone isn't enough. We are here to make that invisible infrastructure visible, accessible, and shareable.

SAL is our commitment to building and strengthening the pathways between filmmakers in South Asia and the diaspora, carried forward through four initiatives.

We build pathways for creatives across South Asia and the diaspora so that knowledge, craft, and opportunity move in both directions.

An ecosystem where South Asian creatives gain access and opportunity regardless of where they are or who they know.

PRINCIPLES BEHIND THE WORK

Equity

Knowledge is a shared resource.

Access should not hinge on privilege, proximity, or timing. What is shared in our open rooms stays available across geography and time.

Solidarity

Holding the door open.
Crossing a threshold comes with a responsibility to the artists behind us. We direct our access, resources, and platforms to make space for others to enter and lead.

Reciprocity

A two-way corridor.

South Asia and its diaspora each hold deep creative communities, knowledge, and audiences. We strengthen the corridor between them so ideas, craft, and opportunity can travel in both directions.

Agency

Led by lived experience.
The people who make this ecosystem help shape its direction. The questions, needs, and real conditions of our community guide what we build and where we focus.

Care

Sustaining the storyteller.
Bringing people into the room is only the first step. We foster conditions where artists can stay, grow, name invisible structural barriers, and thrive over time.
